Netflix vs. Blockbuster.com

Netflix offers movies by mail and so does Blockbuster.com. Netflix offers a resonably priced service to rent 1, 2, or 3 movies at one time, and so does Blockbuster. The movies are delivered overnight or within two days for each.

The only differences include:
Movielink on Netflix - get your movies directly to your computer, download and go.
Blockbuster Total Access - Deliver the movies back to Blockbuster.com by mail or in a local store near you. Each mail pouch is also a free in-store video.

Depending on what you want in a online video rental service you can either choose Netflix or Blockbuster. Both are good and recommended.

January 2009: Say GoodBye DVD

Movie and TV downloads will go through a paradigm shift next year. You are already seeing NetFlix offer Movielink and many other movie production houses and TV networks opening up the Internet's streaming video.

Mark my words. January 2009 you will begin to see the first discontinuation of the standard DVD sold in stores. It will be on a science fiction movie or teen thriller. Over the early part of 2009 you will continue to see movie and TV show releases sold only on the Internet. The DVD will go the way of the CD and video cassette tape.

Your neighborhood video store will go the way of the dinosaurs, replaced by a Yoga chain store. If you can get a DVD player for $30, then the market is saturated.

Blockbuster: A Little Help From My Friends

Movielink offers digital movie downloads to play on your computer, dvd player, video iPod, and soon to be released on the PSP and other mobile devices.

Founded in 2002, Movielink is backed by Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and Warner Bros. Studios.

For Blockbuster, the acquisition comes during one of the company's low points. Competition from cable providers offering video-on-demand and DVD-rental services including Netflix have cut into profits. With Movielink and Blockbuster total access, Blockbuster should see an increase of market share of competitors. Keeping up with the times is the mission of Blockbuster and so far they have achieved it with a little help from its friends.

"Blockbuster is committed to keeping pace with the changing needs of customers by offering them an expanding array of convenient ways to access entertainment content," said Jim Keyes, Blockbuster Chairman and CEO. "
